The Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (SWUYN) under the leader of its National President, Amb. Preye Tambou, has strongly condemned the Nigerian police for arraigning minors over #EndBadGovernanceandhungerprotesters. This move by the police is unacceptable especially considering the already high levels of youth unemployment and frustration in Nigeria. With over 64 million youths unemployed and 1.6 million under-employed, the country is sitting on a ticking time bomb.
The recent reports of minors collapsing due to maltreatment and malnutrition inside a Federal High Court in Abuja are deeply disturbing and unacceptable. This incident highlights the urgent need to address the welfare and protection of children in Nigeria.
The #EndBadGovernance protests are a cry for help, a call to action from young Nigerians who are fed up with the status quo. They are demanding better opportunities, improved living conditions, and an end to corruption. Instead of listening to their concerns, the police cracked down on them, arrested and arraigned even minors.
This is not only unjust but also counterproductive. It’s criminalizing a generation of young people who are already struggling to make ends meet. The government should be focusing on creating jobs, providing education and training, and addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality.
The Nigerian government, civil society organizations, and individuals must work together to ensure the safety, well-being, and protection of children. This incident serves as a wake-up call to prioritize child welfare and take concrete actions to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
