Your Excellencies, distinguished guests, development partners, civil society actors, private-sector stakeholders, and above all my resilient unemployed youths from across Nigeria, it is a great honor to address you at the 10th Anniversary of the Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (SWUYN). I commend the organizers for their decade-long commitment to youth empowerment under the theme “From Unemployment to Empowerment: Ten Years of Youth Power Transforming Nations.”
As Director General of the Bayelsa State Centre for Youth Development, I have seen how targeted youth programs can transform lives and turn challenges into opportunities. Unemployment remains a difficult reality for many young Nigerians, bringing financial strain and emotional pressure. Yet in the midst of these challenges, we must draw strength from three powerful pillars—mental resilience, confidence, and productivity—which together can move us from despair to determination and ultimately from unemployment to empowerment.
First is mental resilience, the ability to endure hardship and emerge stronger. Unemployment should not be viewed as a permanent defeat but as a temporary phase for personal reinvention. Through youth development initiatives in Bayelsa, we have witnessed individuals transform setbacks into success by learning new skills and embracing new opportunities. Resilience begins with self-awareness, positive thinking, healthy living, and the support of communities such as SWUYN.
Closely linked to resilience is confidence, the belief in one’s ability to succeed despite obstacles. Confidence grows through continuous learning, setting achievable goals, networking, and exploring entrepreneurship. When young people believe in their capacity to learn and adapt, they begin to transform their circumstances and create opportunities not only for themselves but also for others.
Finally, productivity is the practical bridge that converts resilience and confidence into tangible outcomes. Unemployment should be a period for intentional growth—acquiring skills, applying for opportunities, and exploring sectors such as agriculture, digital services, health, and hospitality. Governments, development partners, and the private sector must also expand youth training, internships, and startup support.
As we celebrate ten years of SWUYN’s impact, let us recommit ourselves to building a future where Nigerian youths are empowered to thrive. I urge you all to rise with resilience, confidence, and productivity, and together we will build a nation where every young person has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national development.
