Oloibiri community in Ogbia Local Government Area is well known for its historic value to the Nigerian economy. Crude oil was first discovered in Nigeria, at Oloibiri Town in 1956. But on April 6, 2025, a significant event took place in Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. The Nengi James Foundation (NEJAF) successfully organized a 22km marathon to commemorate the discovery of Nigeria’s first oil well in Oloibiri. This event coincided with the United Nations’ International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, highlighting the power of sports to bring people together and promote community development.
The marathon traversed several host communities in Ogbia LGA, including Otuabagi, Otuogidi, Opume, and Oloibiri. This event was a celebration of the rich historical and cultural heritage of the region, while also promoting community development and social cohesion.
The United Nations’ International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is a global celebration of the role of sports in promoting development, peace, and social cohesion. The Oloibiri Oil Well Remembrance Marathon aligns with this theme, highlighting the power of sports to bring people of all walks of life together and promote community development.
Individuals and groups were invited to witness and participate in the celebration at the Christmas Tree Site, a nickname given to the site by the indigenous people of Ogbia. This event provides an opportunity for community members to come together, celebrate their heritage, and promote development and peace in the region.
The Oloibiri Oil Well Remembrance Marathon is a significant event that highlights the importance of community development and social cohesion. The Nengi James Foundation’s efforts to promote sports for development and peace are commendable, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact of this event on the region.
