The attention of the Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (SWUYN), under the esteemed leadership of our National President, Comr. Preye V. Tambou, has been drawn to a recent claims suggesting that the Federal Government of Nigeria has eliminated all all fees at the 33 Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) beginning in the 2025/2026 academic session.
We wish to address and correct the misleading public claim that the information is not entirely accurate.
KEY CLARIFICATIONS:
- FEE STRUCTURE AT FSTCS
While tuition fees have been abolished, the Federal Science and Technical Colleges still impose various non-tuition fees. For instance, at FSTC Ahoada, newly admitted students are required to pay approximately ₦83,000—a sum that covers boarding, uniforms, textbooks, medical care, and miscellaneous expenses. - UNAUTHORIZED FEE INCREASES
There have been reports of unapproved fee hikes. A notable example is FSTC Yaba, where the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) increased fees from ₦5,000 to ₦11,500 without adequate consultation, leading to parental outrage and protests. This underscores the need for transparency and stakeholder engagement in all matters affecting school fees. - GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION
The Federal Government has launched several commendable initiatives aimed at revitalizing technical and vocational education. Among them is the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme, which aims to train three million Nigerians in digital and technical skills by 2027. Additionally, FSTCs nationwide are receiving upgrades in tools, infrastructure, and curriculum to better prepare youths for a technology-driven future.
While we acknowledge the Federal Government’s progress in strengthening technical education and easing financial burdens, it is misleading to suggest that all fees have been eliminated at FSTCs.
As a steadfast champion of accessible and equitable education, SWUYN passionately advocates for the empowerment of unemployed Nigerian youths, igniting their potential through education, skills acquisition, and entrepreneurship, and fostering a more just and prosperous society for all.
We urge the media, parents, educators, and civil society to always seek accurate, verified information and to engage constructively with stakeholders to promote a transparent and inclusive educational ecosystem.
