The recent incident in Niger State, Nigeria, where nearly 100 people lost their lives while scooping fuel from a fallen tanker, is a national tragedy that highlights the desperation and poverty that many Nigerians face.
It is a governmental shame that citizens are forced to resort to such dangerous and desperate measures to survive. The fact that people are willing to risk their lives for a few liters of fuel is a stark reminder of the widespread poverty, unemployment, and lack of opportunities that plague our nation.
Death from fuel tanker overturn and explosion has become a recurring decimal in our country Nigeria, claiming lives in recent times. A recurring decimal in this context is something that happens, and goes on in a repeating pattern. It is high time all arms of Government and all stakeholders implemented policies that will immediately make it a terminating decimal.
The lack of jobs and economic opportunities, as well as poverty and unemployment are forcing people to engage in dangerous and illicit activities to survive. The persistent fuel scarcity in Nigeria is also creating an environment where people are desperate to get fuel, no matter the risk. The absence of effective safety measures and welfare programs leaves citizens vulnerable to poverty and desperation, causing them to struggle to survive in dangerous and highly volatile and flammable environments, oblivion of their surroundings.
We urge the government to take immediate action to address the root causes of this tragedy. This includes job Creation and Economic Empowerment. The Government should implement policies and programs that create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and empower citizens.
The Government should implement a comprehensive Fuel Subsidy Reform program that will ensure availability and affordability of fuel at all times and places.
They should establish effective social safety and welfare programs that will protect citizens from poverty and desperation to survive. They should also develop and implement effective disaster preparedness and response plans to minimize the impact of such incidents.
In conclusion, the tragedy of the fuel tanker incident is a wake-up call for our nation. We must come together to demand action from our government to address the root causes of poverty, unemployment, and desperation. We owe it to the victims and their families to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
