High Chief Dr. Se-Alabor Nengi James has sent a clear message to the Nigerian Government: “the era of ignoring environmental damage in the Niger Delta must end.”
Speaking after receiving the prestigious title of Omereoha 1 of Akpoha in Ebonyi State, the Ijaw leader reaffirmed his commitment to the people. Dr. James, who is currently running for the office of National President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), stated that the INC will remain a firm voice against the “environmental injustices” plaguing Ijaw land.
For over sixty years, the Ijaw people have lived with the harsh effects of the oil and gas industry. Dr. James highlighted several key issues that require immediate government action:
- Gas Flaring: Constant fire in the sky that ruins crops and causes respiratory illnesses.
- Oil Spills: Leaks that have turned once-fertile lands and fishing waters into toxic zones.
- Industrial Pollution: Chemicals from extractive activities that poison the local drinking water.
- Human Rights Violations: The unfair treatment of community members who speak out against these conditions.
The title “Omereoha,” which means “One who does good for the community,” reflects Dr. James’s long history of service. His recent honor in the Akpoha Autonomous Community of Ebonyi State shows that his influence and reputation for fairness cross ethnic lines.
As he seeks to lead the INC, Dr. James promises to use the platform to demand a cleaner, safer, and fairer environment. He believes that the wealth taken from the soil of the Ijaw people should not come at the cost of their lives and health. High Chief Dr. Se-Alabor Nengi James reiterated his commitment to pursuing the Ijaw cause when he said: “The Ijaw National Congress will not relent. We will continue to push the government to address the pollution and violence that have followed oil extraction for far too long.”
