In a remarkable display of academic distinction, a single Ijaw community has produced five accomplished professors, each making waves in their respective fields. This small, yet vibrant community, rooted in strong values of education and academic perseverance, has become a beacon of inspiration for many.
The professors, hailing from Odimodi Community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, have achieved significant milestones in their diverse disciplines, ranging from mathematics to humanities and social sciences. Their collective achievements are a testament to the community’s dedication to fostering a culture of learning and excellence.
The journey of these five professors is deeply intertwined with Odimodi’s commitment to education. From humble beginnings to prestigious academic positions, their stories highlight the importance of mentorship, determination, and access to opportunities.
Professor Chris Ogolo Ikporukpo,(B.Sc, Ph.D. F. A.N.G.),
Professor of Geography, University of Ibadan, and Former Vice Chancellor, Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State, has earned accolades for his groundbreaking research in Geography, and is a mentor to many aspiring scholars and Professors.
Professor Emeritus Richard Ogoja Angyama (late), Professor of Mathematics, University of East London. He was a pioneer in Mathematics, known for his collaboration in various mathematical research projects.
Professor Bryan L. Gere, Associate Professor of Vocational Rehabilitation and Training, University of Maryland Eastern Shores, USA. He has made international strides in his field, bringing recognition to Odimodi Community.
Professor Henchard B. Erezene,
Professor of African History, Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State. He is recognised for his significant contribution to the field of African studies.
Prof. Jude Iyabarade Ikporukpo, Professor of Political Science, Niger Delta University, has excelled in both teaching and innovation, blending tradition with modern approaches.
The success of these five educators is deeply rooted in the values instilled by their community. Known for its emphasis on family support, a strong educational foundation, and collective progress, Odimodi community has nurtured an environment where excellence thrives.
“Education has always been a priority here,” says Dr. Peretengboro klinton Bibaikefie, a vibrant youth ambassador in Odimodi Community and the CEO of Iduwini Voice News. “We believe in empowering our youth to dream big, and these professors are living proof of what can be achieved with that mindset.”
The impact of these professors extends beyond their professional accomplishments. Through their work, they have inspired countless students, proving that academic and personal success is attainable regardless of one’s background.
“They have set a standard for all of us,” says Akin Disi, a former youth President of Odimodi Community. “It is amazing to see people from our community achieve so much. It motivates us to aim higher.”
What makes this story even more remarkable is that it doesn’t end here. The community continues to produce individuals who aspire to follow in the footsteps of these trailblazers. They are growing without numbers in engineering, the sciences, law etc. With ongoing support for education and innovation, the legacy of excellence is poised to grow even further.
As Hon. Dennis Yeinbiri Bibaikefie, (Chairman of the organising committee in honour of these five Professors, taking place in December 28, 2024 at Odimodi Community), puts it, “Five professors is just the beginning. Our community is small, but our dreams are big. We are confident that there are many more success stories waiting to be written.”
Odimodi community’s story is not only a celebration of its achievements but also a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education. It shows that with the right values and support, greatness is within reach for all.
It is noteworthy that Warefa Pereke hails from Odimodi, and is strongly related to two of these five Professors.
